Getting delayed and missing a connecting flight can be one of the most frustrating things ever; waiting patiently as the plane slowly empties, knowing that most of the other passengers have nowhere to be in a hurry and that you might have an opportunity to dash across the airport and make your gate, if you could only just get off now! Of course, that very rarely happens and, when you see the sign with your name on it as you embark, the realisation that you are about to enter limbo land dawns. Unless, of course, you are delayed in Dubai. Having experienced exactly that recently, it was straight to the transit hotel, shower and quick change and off to the mall for me.
Dubai boasts a multitude of experiences that you can enjoy while you wait for your ride to land. I didn’t have an enormous amount of time so I opted for one of the giant malls, the Dubai Mall in fact, which is basically a mini city, air conditioned city next to the famous Burj Khalifa and the dancing fountains. There is more than enough going on in this retail wonderland to keep you occupied for a few hours. First off, one of the fantastic eateries that boasts an outside terrace overlooking the fountains with a front row seat of the world’s tallest building. There’s nothing more relaxing than the sun on your face, local music offering a background and some tasty fair as you plan your assault on the plethora of shops inside.
If retail therapy is not you thing, the mall has plenty of other options, check out the latest blockbuster on the top floor with Reel Cinemas. Maybe you want to try something a little more energetic? The ice rink is an indoor winter wonderland, and a great place to get the heart pumping as you make your way around the ice. For something less strenuous but absolutely fascinating, the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is well worth a visit. You can glimpse into the underwater world from the mall, but to really appreciate the magnitude of it, you need to head inside. It is as spectacular as it is breathtaking. If the frustration of missing your connection is eating away at you, put your mind at ease by trying the Emirates A380 Experience and put yourself in the pilot seat. With WIFI throughout the mall, it’s also easy to keep in touch with the outside world and let them know what’s holding you up. The tome passes very quickly and in no time, I was back on the transit bus and heading for my new flight, having enjoyed a relaxing few hours in one of the world’s most vibrant destinations.
